Build vs. Buy

The complexity tax: what packaged software really costs a small business

The subscription is the smallest line item. Training, workarounds, consultants and unused features add up to the real bill.

Ask a small-business owner what their software costs and they will quote the subscription. Ask them how many hours a week someone spends making that software do what the business needs, and the real number shows up.

The four parts of the tax

  • Learning. Every new tool needs someone to learn it. In a five-person company, that is the owner or the office manager, the two people with the least spare time.
  • Workarounds. Every gap between how the software works and how you work becomes a manual step: a spreadsheet, a copy-paste, a reminder on someone's phone.
  • Integration glue. The booking tool does not talk to the invoicing tool, which does not talk to the review tool. Someone re-keys the data, or pays for a connector, or both.
  • Shelfware. Most packaged suites are priced on everything they do, and most small businesses use a small fraction of it.

The alternative used to be worse

For years the only escape was custom development, with specs, contractors and five-figure budgets before you saw anything working. So owners paid the complexity tax and called it the cost of doing business.

Describe it instead of configuring it

The shift AI brings is simple to state. Instead of learning software and configuring it to approximate your process, you state your process and the software is created to match. The app has only the screens you need, uses your words for things, and connects the steps you actually do.

With sup3rapp, that app is also deployed and maintained for you. No servers, no developer to manage, no version upgrades to schedule. The tax goes away because the complexity never gets built in the first place.

Want this for your business?

Describe what you need and sup3rapp builds it, deploys it and keeps it running. Or ask Babu in the chat bubble what you could build first.
